today is a very special day [part 2].

Happy Mother's Day mama! If you have ever met my mom, you know that she is both kind hearted and opinionated, caring yet unbending, guiding yet encouraging. I love my mom a lot and am extremely sad that I cannot be with her today. This is the first Mother's Day away from my mama! Mom, if you're reading this, know that you are loved by a Father who created you in the most beautiful way. As well, to all of the other women who have played a mother figure in my life, thank you. Beyond Mother's Day, today is a huge day for me, and for this blog! If you read my last post in April, you might have tasted a hint of today. Today, I began a new typography artwork venture called the bear&bluejay collective. If you're interesting in checking out what it looks like, head to Instagram first and then to my brand new Etsy shop that showcases a couple of items that I will be selling. The links are below!

There are a couple of reasons why I wanted to start this, and also want to explain to you the meaning behind the name, "bear&bluejay collective". First of all, I love art! Since I was little I have loved creating, whether or not that was with paper, paint, DIY projects, you name it. As I started university, I felt as though I lost a lot of that spark. That loss was due to a lot of my time being directed towards ventures that required a lot of my attention. As my track season winded down this past february and my time began to free up, I realized that I wanted to return back to my roots and find something that was reflective of both who I am and the creative process that I craved for. I instantly thought of calligraphy and this past Christmas where I found my Grandpa's old calligraphy nibs hiding away in a drawer. Using them made me feel connected to him despite his passing, and I liked the idea of carrying on his adventurous, loving and creative spirit.

I started to experiment and I absolutely sucked. I threw a lot of pieces of paper away and started to look up YouTube tutorials and Pinterest infographic tips. They helped a lot really. I went on Instagram and checked out what other people were doing, but also reminded myself that my art is meant to be a reflection of my personality and own style.

About two weeks ago I decided that I wanted to start an Etsy shop with a few basic items. More items will be added as time passes, so stay tuned for more pieces over the summer. Like I mentioned, I am very much in the learning process but also want to keep myself accountable to practice by sharing the adventure with you!

The title, "bear&bluejay collective" stems from a few sources. If you know me well, you will know that I love bears. They are my favourite animal...polar, panda, grizzly, you name it. I just watched the Jungle Book last night and re-fell in love with Baloo, one of my favourite childhood Disney characters. "Bear" and "bluejay" together reference Matthew 10:16, where Christ calls us to be as cunning as serpents and as innocent as doves in a place where wolves are at hand. Bears represent bravery and standing tall in Christ and bluejays represent the birds in both that verse but also in Matthew 10:29, where Christ cares for the birds of the air. As He cares for them, He also cares much more for us, which is a pretty neat thing. The word "collective" represents an added feature of this endeavour, which will be revealed later on in the summer (stay tuned). You can try and think of your own definition for the time being.

Lastly, today also is the one year anniversary of this blog. The past year has seen a lot of pain, triumph, joy, despair and love. Thank you for being a part of the bigger journey in which Christ has called me, and you, to be a part of it. Thank you for allowing this to be my ministry and to share the things of my heart and what God has called me into with you. I hope and pray that you will be a part of the next year to come. So, please give the bear&bluejay collective a follow and share it on FB as well! It is much appreciated.
